Sometimes when playing a dvd the back speakers don't seem to work at all. I have the 5.1 set up through B&W speakers, the front speakers work ok, occasionally I will get music coming through the back but nothing else.Your best bet is to get hold of a test disc with a known reference on it, which is typically recorded 10dB below "reference" level. Then get an SPL meter, play the reference signal (usually band limited pink noise), and adjust your volume control for 75dB SPL on our meter set to C weighting.
